How to Make a Puking Pumpkin
Halloween is one of the best holidays for food and decorations. It’s easy to get creative and make a spread of spooky snacks and treats!
My favorite gory delight this year is the hilarious puking pumpkin. Pumpkins throw up everything from their own insides to delicious Halloween dips. Some even have chemicals mixed in their bowels, making a really gross-looking mixture spew forth.
Use the seeds for toasting and the pumpkin flesh to make pumpkin puree for dips and desserts.

Pumpkin Puke (Guacamole)
I decided I’d rather have a delicious dip and a healthy one at that. I carved my pumpkin with sick eyes and a wide-open mouth. I used my favorite guacamole dip recipe and let that pumpkin puke up a healthy snack made of avocados and other fresh ingredients. Avocado is a fantastic superfood doing all sorts of good for the body.
I served my pukin’ pumpkin with blue tortilla chips. They’re really purple—a perfect Halloween color—alongside some other spooktacular snacks.

Ingredients
- 3 ripe avocados
- 1/2 cup finely diced red onion
- 2 Roma tomatoes, diced
- 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1 1/2 teaspoons lime juice, freshly squeezed
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 chopped jalapeño pepper (optional)
Instructions
- Cut the avocados in half and remove the pits and peels.
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, mash the avocado with a fork or potato masher.
- Dice and add the cilantro, tomato, and onion.
- Add the spices and lime juice. Mix well.
Bonus Recipe: Toasted Pumpkin Seeds
Don’t throw out those pumpkin seeds—save them to make more tasty treats!

- Pumpkin seeds (the ones you scooped out from your pumpkin)
- 2 teaspoons olive oil
- Fine-grain sea salt, to taste
Instructions
- Rinse the seeds and separate them from the stringy pumpkin flesh.
- Pat dry with paper towels or a clean cloth.
- Toss the seeds with olive oil.
- Sprinkle to taste with salt.

Recipe 2: Homemade Pumpkin Puree
Pumpkin puree is used in pumpkin pies, of course, and lots of other desserts. We usually buy it in a can, but you can get enough pumpkin flesh from your discarded pumpkin to make your own. Here’s how.
Ingredients
- Pumpkin flesh, seeds, and strings removed
Instructions
- Remove the stringy flesh and seeds.
- Cut the pumpkin in half.
- Place the pumpkin halves, cut-side down, on a baking sheet.
- Roast in a 300°F oven until the flesh falls from the skin.
- Blend the softened flesh in a food processor.
Sweet and Savory Pumpkin Dips
Pumpkin dip recipes are plentiful. Some are sweet, and others are savory. Serve sweet pumpkin dips with apple slices, graham crackers, or ginger snaps. Serve savory ones with an assortment of crackers.
